Escalators
Where are you in the debate?
How do you watch video content?
On your TV? Your Computer? iPod – or other screen option?
Do you remotely speak to people on a phone? A Windows mobile device? An iPhone or heaven forbid –a handset…
Do you remember the day your Blackberry blacked out? Where were you and what were you doing? More importantly what did you do?
Bottom line – when Apple introduced the I-Phone their “commercial “was all about the phone and the emotional connection of “Hello-Hello”. Worst comes to worst –all that amazing technology fails or you can’t figure out how to use it. But, you can still make calls…phone calls…and connect – not Apple’s primary message…for sure – but true nevertheless.
This got me thinking. What are we so dependent on that we have lost our ability to do without?
A number of years ago – I facilitated some strategic session for an important global consulting firm. The audience for each of 6 facilitations was senior partners. One talked about how she could not function in her job without her laptop – literally. In other words her value was based on her ability to use the technology. The other partners were silent and a bit embarrassed. Imagine – they were all about their intellectual capital, she was all about a laptop. Now, what do you think client’s pay for?
Imagine in your life – home or work – what do you really need to be able to function; what really defines you; what can you do without; or use in another way to accomplish your goals.
Think on this:
I like an escalator because an escalator can never break, it can only become stairs. There would never be an escalator temporarily out of order sign, only an escalator temporarily stairs. Sorry for the convenience.

"What are we so dependent on that we have lost our ability to do without?" Without cheap oil and natural gas our societies would be in chaos. Oil is the feedstock for almost everything we use and consume (either directly or indirectly) as well as the fuel for almost all of our vehicles. Without natural gas most of us would starve because it's the basis of artificial fertilizers.

Although a computer is part of handling big data, I can manage a lot of situations without a PC. Even with a PC, there are lots of judgement calls that are pencil and paper experiences, or even waving of arms. A few weeks ago, however, I had a real issue. No pencil sharpeners! So that's my current dependency. Tom.

There is an old saying. "What one has to do without, There is no good in thinking more about." We are evolution, we are about finding another way, if we do not have a bridge, we will use a boat, no boat, we swim. In short, if our attitudes are right there is nothing we can't do without.
