Perspective Code

Chances are you have once asked someone to review your efforts or check an idea you had or validate a thought because you were “too close to the work.” If you haven’t, there is a good chance someone asked you to be the dispassionate voice of distance for their labors.

What a concept! Create a little distance by bringing in people who are distanced. Create real edge by smoothing over the rough ones we no longer see or even feel because we are “too close” and put yourself to the test…

How often do we do it? Not enough!!! Not nearly enough.

So think on this:

“Go some distance away because the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance, and a lack of harmony of proportion is rapidly seen.”

If you have ever seen the Last Supper, you understand this. You also know that he knows about what he talks…….(gimme a break)….

Up close the Last Supper is perfect in its detail. But the perspective it shows when viewed from a distance is what creates the paradigm—breaking shift in art of the time. When viewed against a fresco on the opposite wall, his genius is even more breathtaking.

“The Code” is simple. Perspective can lead you places that flat viewing just cannot. And we all need some perspective. In fact, a summer vacation day or two or week or two weeks of perspective is a wonderful thing!!!!

Here is to da Vinci and perspective – not to mention Milan!!!
